Sony WH-CH710N: 2020 Wireless Bluetooth Headphones

Today I will conduct a review of Sony WH-CH710N ($ 200) – these are new on-ear headphones from a popular brand. I would not like the Sony WH-CH710N noise-canceling wireless headphones to be a more affordable alternative to the flagship Sony WH-1000XM3, but the novelty still falls short. The Bluetooth headset received good sound, an NFC chip and a new adaptive noise reduction technology, but the overall noise reduction efficiency, material quality and assembly leave much to be desired.

Short review WH-CH710N

Judging by the specifications, the Sony WH-CH710N wireless headphones turned out to be worthy: this is the more affordable version of the Sony WH-1000XM3, which is offered at a price half that price.

The disadvantage is that the WH-CH710N Bluetooth headphones use a plastic construction – this is necessary for a lower cost. Also, the novelty cannot completely disable Hi-Res Audio support, and noise reduction, although not bad, is still far from the flagship 1000XM3.

Sony WH-CH710N Review

There are not many headphones that offer Active Noise Reduction (ANC) at this price, but after reviewing the Sony WH-CH710N, I was surprised that Sony made the noise reduction so low-quality (in any case, when compared with the same 1000XM3). This moment may not allow the headset to compete with analogs and, especially, more premium models.

Who should buy the Sony WH-CH710N?

  • People who want Sony ANC but don’t want to spend big money. The novelty cannot compete with the Sony WH-1000XM3, but still the headset is of high quality;
  • For those for whom battery life is important and who do not want to charge their headphones every night;
  • People who need noise reduction for work or the street.

Price and Release Date

The Sony WH-CH710N was released with the Sony WF-XB700 Extra Bass Wireless Headphones in April 2020 – the timing for the release of the noise canceling gadget is great, since everyone works at home.

Headphones Sony WH-CH710N

If we talk about the cost, the Sony WH-CH710N Bluetooth are in the middle price range. They can be bought for $ 200 (14,500 rubles). And this is the most affordable price on the market for noise canceling headphones, especially from a well-known company like Sony.

Many people were disappointed that this was not the Sony WH-1000XM4. Unfortunately, Sony has not yet provided any information about the 4 versions of the popular line. However, according to the latest news, the model will be released in September 2020 at a price of $ 350 (more on the link ).

Design Sony WH-CH710N

Sony WH-CH710N colors

The company introduced several color options for its new items:

  • Blue
  • White
  • Black

The first thing I noticed when reviewing the WH-CH710N when I got them out of the box is how light they are. They do not pull at 218 grams, such a gadget will not even be felt. The reason is that the headphones are made entirely of plastic is far from premium. So far this is the first and most obvious headset flaw that was needed to lower the price of the WH-CH710N.

Headphones WH-CH710N

There are a lot of creaks in the design, and although the earmolds rotate 90 degrees, they cannot lie flat due to the absence of loops. So, if you try to fold the headphones into a bag, then you are unlikely to succeed, the gadget will take up all the space. In addition, plastic tends to amplify sounds. Therefore, if you accidentally touch something or scratch the headband, you will immediately hear it.

In terms of design, the Sony WH-CH710N is good, but there is nothing special here – ordinary stylish headphones made in minimalism. They have a rounded appearance and a really comfortable fit. Earmolds are made of plush foam pads with memory effect – the device is comfortable to wear even for more than 4 hours in a row. The lining is also located on the headband, so it does not compress on the crown of the head, like many other full-size headphones .

WH-CH710N Headphones

Unlike the Sony WH-1000XM3, the WH-CH710N has no touch-sensitive sensors – instead, you get nice old-school buttons. The clicks on them are well felt, so the question is “Did I increase the volume exactly?” you will not have 100%.

All controls are located on the right earphone and are made completely ergonomically. There are three buttons where the middle one is multifunctional: it pauses / plays music, accepts and rejects phone calls, and to call the voice assistant you just need to hold it. However, you won’t be able to activate voice control by simply saying “Hello Siri” or “OK Google,” neither Siri nor the Google Assistant is integrated into the Sony WH-CH710N wireless headphones.

On both sides are the volume buttons, and there is also a fourth button that allows you to switch between the active noise reduction function or isolation of ambient sounds. For this, built-in microphones are used so that you can hear what is happening around you. This feature can be extremely useful when you need to hear any announcements on the plane or metro.

On the left earpiece WH-CH710N, everything is much simpler. Here are the 3.5mm Audio Jack, the connect button, and the USB Type-C port, which is used for charging.

Headphones WH-CH710N

Headphones do not come with a hard case – this makes them less attractive for frequent travel (even without a charging unit). Inside the box you will find only a short USB-C cable and an auxiliary cable for a wired connection.

Detailed instructions for using the Sony WH-CH710N can be found on the Sony support site !

WH-CH710N Connection

How to connect Sony WH-CH710N earphones? Everything is simple!

  1. Hold the power button for a few seconds after turning it on. The gadget will go into pairing mode, and you can find the device in the Bluetooth settings.
  2. Via NFC. If you have an Android smartphone, you need to bring it to the NFC (left earphone). A pop-up window for connection will appear on the phone.

The WH-CH710N earphones support Bluetooth 5.0 and are equipped only with the AAC Bluetooth codec – this is strange considering that the LDAC is developed by Sony. Why was it abandoned? Ask for something easier. No need to rely on perfect quality sound, at least without wires.

Overlays Sony WH-CH710N

Fortunately, you can always connect a 3.5 mm audio cable to the input at the bottom of the left cup (included).

When reviewing the WH-CH710N, the connection radius was about 10 meters, even the interior walls were not an obstacle. There were no problems when watching YouTube, the sound was synchronized, which is really important if you spend a lot of time watching the video.

Most people use the power button to connect a Bluetooth headset, but do not forget that the Sony WH-CH710N headphones support NFC. Great feature! Especially for the latest flagships on Android. Not to mention that the gadget uses Bluetooth 5.0 with support for SBC and AAC codecs, but, as mentioned above, without LDAC or aptX.

Sony WH-CH710N Battery Life

The battery life of the Sony WH-CH710N is about 35 hours without recharging when the noise reduction is on and up to 200 hours in standby mode. When I reviewed the WH-CH710N, I listened to them for three consecutive days, 8 hours a day, and did not even hear a warning about low battery. The battery life is likely to deteriorate over time, but I guarantee that the Bluetooth headset will work for several days, maybe even a week on a single charge.

Sony WH-CH710N runtime

According to Sony , the model has a fast charge: 10 minutes Fast Fuel will give you an hour of listening to music.

The strange thing is that the specifications on the package say that for 100% charge it will take about 7 hours … this, of course, is too much. At the end of the review of the Sony WH-CH710N, I just left them to charge all night – this is the most optimal solution, since it is problematic to find seven hours in the afternoon.

Sony WH-CH710N noise reduction: how effective?

Noise Reduction WH-CH710N

Noise Reduction WH-CH710N (ANC) is fully priced. In combination with headphone pads, active noise cancellation quite effectively suppresses ambient sounds, including frequencies of 300 Hz and below. I constantly ride the subway and have not yet noticed that there are problems with the isolation of low noise (the crash of cars), which are often found in most devices. So for me personally, the noise is great here!

Microphone Sony WH-CH710N

Microphone Sony WH-CH710N

The microphone is suitable for phone calls, but nothing more. The frequency response is quite stable, but due to an insufficiently effective Bluetooth connection, the voice seems compressed.

How does the Sony WH-CH710N sound?

Sony WH-CH710N sound

Headphones Sony WH-CH710N sound very good, the music was balanced, but the sound is not perfect. As you can see from the graph of the frequency response, these headphones only slightly emit lower frequencies, so the Sony WH-XB900N would be more suitable for bass, since they have a much stronger bass range.

Frequency response WH-CH710N

In addition, it was felt that the middle is missing. For example, when testing some songs, the chorus vocals were not as loud as I used to. And the culmination of the song was simply “removed” because of this. Most likely, I got used to the more driving sound of other headphones, but in many of my favorite tracks the vocals were not powerful enough.

In general, the WH-CH710N wireless headphones sound too flat, but, fortunately, this can be fixed in the equalizer. You can download the sound tuning application on the Sony Headphones Connect support page .

Review results Sony WH-CH710N: is it worth buying?

The gadget has all the basic features that made the Sony WH-1000XM3 so successful. Sony WH-CH710N offers active noise reduction (ANC) and normal sound quality, and at the same time look pretty professional. Unfortunately, when reviewing the WH-CH710N, it became clear that they clearly lacked noise reduction power, and the build quality is poor.

Sony WH-CH710N Review

However, they are about half the price of Sony’s flagships. And although I didn’t really like the sound while testing the music, the headset is no worse than many other headphones without HD. Long battery life is the main advantage of the new model, which will allow you to do without charging for several days.

Of course, the WH-CH710N does not meet the high standards of the WH-1000XM3, but the low price, adaptive suppression technology and long operating time make the new product a worthy representative of the popular brand. Headphones will appeal to those who do not want to spend $ 350 and are looking for the most budget quality headset .

And who is the competitor?

You can find better headphones for a lower price – for example, the JBL Tune 750BTNC , which I highly recommend.

It all depends on what concessions you are willing to make regarding quality. The WH-1000XM3 was significantly cheaper, but still almost $ 80 more expensive than the WH-CH710N for $ 200. The previous model in the Sony WH-CH700N line dropped to $ 129 and has similar characteristics. But the latest Sony model has new features and technologies that are worth it to overpay for them!
