Samsung Galaxy Buds Plus Review: Best Wireless Headphones

Today we will review Samsung Galaxy Buds Plus – the latest in 2020 from Samsung, costing $ 160. The brand is commendable for creating a competitive pair of free-standing wireless headphones in the face of growing competition.

9.8Expert Score
Advantages and disadvantages

The Samsung Galaxy Buds Plus got great sound and longer battery life compared to last year's Samsung Galaxy Buds, but they still lack enhanced support for audio codecs and full noise reduction.

PROS
  • Design. As always, a very interesting and stylish appearance - such universal headphones will appeal to almost everyone.
  • Battery life. 11 hours of battery life for fully wireless headphones is an excellent indicator of Galaxy Buds +, even for relatively more expensive headsets.
  • Compatible with iOS. This is an additional plus that will allow you to use headphones not only on the Android platform, but also on iOS. And this is a large audience with smartphones from Apple.
CONS
  • Limited support for audio codecs.
  • Poor water resistance. There is only IPX2, which significantly limits water resistance (rain spray, sweat drops, etc.)
  • No noise reduction. Already in many modern models of fully wireless headphones there is noise reduction. Here, alas, the Galaxy Buds Plus is inferior to competitors.

Short review

Samsung Galaxy Buds Plus got all the features and features that the Wireless Headphones (TWS) lacked so much: great battery life, better sound when talking thanks to the third internal microphone, as well as a new design with two powerful drivers for better and cleaner sound.

Samsung Galaxy Buds Plus Design

In addition, iOS support has finally arrived through the new Samsung Galaxy Buds Plus app.

What are the disadvantages of headphones? The new Samsung Galaxy Buds + lacks high-quality audio codecs and a higher level of IPX4. Not to mention the fact that the gadget does not have the function of noise reduction or isolation, as well as the built-in voice assistant that other TWS models have.

Headphones can easily compete with competitors in their price range. And although the gadget is far from leaders such as the Sony WF-1000XM3 or AirPods Pro, they are much cheaper and offer nice additional features for Samsung owners.

For headphones, the company released its first Galaxy Buds Plus update after some users said they heard a strange sound of white noise when using wireless headphones. According to Samsung , the firmware version R175XXUOATB5 is designed to solve this problem, as well as other shortcomings, including a delay in pairing and disabling Bluetooth.

Cost Samsung Galaxy Buds Plus

The company unveiled the latest Galaxy Buds + wireless headphones at Unpacked 2020 in San Francisco, where it announced the launch of sales on February 14, and in stores from March 6.

Cost Samsung Galaxy Buds Plus

The price of the Samsung Galaxy Buds Plus is $ 160 (about 10,000 rubles) – the same price was the same as the previous model in 2019. The model comes out cheaper than the best wireless headphones of 2020 Sony WF-1000XM3, although this model received the function of active noise reduction. You can find cheaper TWS headphones. For example, the Kinera YH623 , which cost only $ 75. Or consider a worthy competitor to Freebuds 3 for $ 110.

Compared to peers in terms of price and quality, the Samsung Galaxy Buds + the best wireless headphones this year.

Design and construction

The design of the Galaxy Buds Plus is very similar to the appearance of its predecessor – it is a smooth mother-of-pearl case and adjustable silicone ears. The gadget is red, white, blue and black. Unlike AirPods, which received only white color, Galaxy Buds + headphones are presented with a wide selection of colors. Everyone will find it to their liking!

Case Samsung Galaxy Buds Plus

In the new model, Samsung dispensed with an elongated shape, like the AirPods and AirPods Pro. The “ears” are smooth and small. They are inserted into the charging case and into the ear. Hold and do not fall out thanks to a small ledge that covers the crease on the ear.

Headphones Samsung Galaxy Buds Plus

With a size of 17.5 x 22.5 x 19.2 mm, Buds + fill most of the ear canal (this allows you to not fall out of the ear when playing sports) and slightly protrude from the ears. Because of this design, there were problems with wearing the headphones in bed, as the pillow put a lot of pressure and discomfort.

For your comfort, inside the box you will find additional ear pads in three different sizes, a special larger nozzle to hold the earbuds in your ears.

Samsung Galaxy Buds + Design

From the outside you will find a sensor that recognizes single, double, triple and long presses. A long tap activates the virtual assistant, lowers the volume, or turns on the amplification of the surrounding sounds.

Using the sensor as a headphone control may be a little awkward at first, as pressing a button pushes the headphone further into the ear. But soon you will get used to the sensitivity of the panel.

Samsung Galaxy Buds Plus in the ears

It would be nice if Samsung introduced a constantly listening virtual assistant here, but so far it remains only to dream about it.

Headphones Samsung Galaxy Buds +

The only serious problem we found when reviewing the Galaxy Buds + is that the IPX2 earphones are not splash resistant. This means that they are suitable for training, but do not take them with you to the pool or to the beach. Compared with the Apple AirPods Pro, they are IPX4 waterproof. In my opinion, the headphones should be completely waterproof so that there is no fear of damaging them in the gym or in the rain.

Case Galaxy Buds +

As for the case itself, it is quite light and smooth with rounded edges. The Samsung Galaxy Buds Plus Headphone Case fits easily in your pocket and provides extra charge for the headset between uses. As expected, the case received a USB-C connector for charging, as did Samsung phones. This means that you do not have to carry a separate cable.

Battery Life

Galaxy Buds + (Plus) has a longer battery life than the previous Galaxy Buds. The wireless headphones themselves hold a charge of up to 11 hours, and the charging case will provide an additional 11 hours. Thus, the total battery life is 22 hours. Very good!

11 hours is an excellent indicator for headphones, but I would like a more powerful charging case. For comparison, Apple AirPods hold 5 hours of charge, but with an additional 20 hours that the charging case gives, it turns out as much as 25. It’s nice to see Buds Plus with an increased internal battery, but the case clearly failed.

For a week of review Galaxy Buds + (Plus), the headphones and case charged only once. And this is with fairly active listening to music at 50% volume. And if you listen to music at high volume so as not to hear extraneous noise, you will charge once every 3 days.

Connect Galaxy Buds +

In terms of wireless connectivity, Bluetooth 5.0 provides a stable wireless connection. AirPods still only supports Bluetooth 4.2, which is already quite old, but has the advantage of the H1 chip – it improves battery life and sound quality in the headphones.

Samsung Galaxy Buds Plus App

Unfortunately, neither the Samsung Galaxy Buds Plus nor the Apple AirPods Pro support high-quality aptX and aptX Low Latency audio codecs, not to mention LDAC. At the moment, the only options are SBC and AAC, and then if you are not using Android 7.0 or later.

However, you will also have the opportunity to use the Samsung Scalable Audio codec, which offers higher bitrate support and better stability.

Galaxy Wearable App

Galaxy Wearable App

You can set up Buds + headphones by connecting via Bluetooth, or the Galaxy Wearable app or the Samsung Galaxy Buds Plus from Google Play and the Apple App Store. With their help, you can configure the headphones and suppress ambient noise – so it’s worth downloading . During the review of Galaxy Buds Plus, it turned out that both applications are intuitive and offer several options for adjusting sound and amplifying ambient noise.

The last feature worth paying attention to is that Galaxy Buds Plus can connect to multiple devices without having to pair them again every time.

Sound quality

The main advantage of the sound of the Samsung Galaxy Buds Plus is the new system with two drivers. This technology will expand the range of headphones and increase the overall quality and clarity of sound.

During the Buds + review, the sound quality was definitely felt, so you can accurately evaluate the sound: it is rich, balanced and does not bother if you listen to music all day.

Sound Galaxy Buds Plus

To achieve this effect, Samsung has focused on low and high frequencies, which will allow you to use this wireless headset to watch YouTube or Netflix TV shows. Even individual music genres sound very good in them. Just turn on the Red Hot Chili Peppers and everything will sparkle for you with other colors – great bass! However, songs that should have a good bass response sound a bit muffled relative to other headsets.

Sound settings Galaxy Buds Plus

Using the Samsung Galaxy Buds Plus or Samsung Wearable applications, you can adjust the sound of the headphones (there are options for Soft, Dynamic, Clear, Treble and Bass Boost), but there is no significant difference between them.

Sound Galaxy Buds Plus

Now increased clarity is the main advantage of the new headphones – Samsung has increased the number of internal microphones, which has led to improved communication quality. This statement was justified in the review of the Galaxy Buds +, since everyone we called through the headphones said that they sound as good as talking directly through the microphone of the smartphone.

Noise suppression

The biggest drawback of the Samsung Galaxy Buds Plus is that they did not receive Active Noise Canceling (ANC) and did not significantly reduce passive noise. This means that if you plan to buy them, get ready to hear a lot of third-party external sounds when listening to music. This is a plus if you are in the gym and do not mind hearing background noise, or if you are in the office and you need to hear what colleagues say. But those who are looking for a model with 100% noise isolation will have to find other options.

Noise Reduction Galaxy Buds Plus

If you suddenly lose your gadget, you can easily find them by going to the application and selecting “Find Headphones”. While they are charged, a melody will sound in the headphones – this is certainly a very convenient feature from Samsung for people who constantly forget their gadget somewhere.

Review Summary

So, what is the place occupied by the Samsung Galaxy Buds Plus headphones among other wireless headphones (TWS)? I can say with confidence that they are better than 70% of the models on the market. Due to the long battery life (about 11 hours) Buds + will be good for those who are annoyed by constant charging. However, the gadget does not have a built-in virtual voice assistant and does not have sufficient water resistance due to irrelevant IPX2.

Review Samsung Galaxy Buds Plus headphones

Samsung Galaxy Buds + (Plus)

However, the biggest problem is the lack of noise isolation or even minimal noise reduction – this feature is available even on Amazon Echo Buds for the same price ($ 150). Of course, the sound in them is not as good as in the Galaxy Buds Plus, especially with a weaker battery capacity. But what is the use of all these advantages if the music is almost inaudible in the subway.

Samsung Galaxy Buds + (Plus) is a good value for money for people who want wireless headphones (TWS) with great battery life. The model is not the highest quality, but the design with two drivers is a big step for Samsung, the gadget is perfect for watching movies and listening to bass music.

And at the end, advice! If you are an iOS user, then it’s better to take a closer look at Apple AirPods Pro, and if Android, then at Sony WF-1000XM3. These headphones sound better and have an active noise reduction function. Yes, the battery life is far from 11 hours, like the Galaxy Buds Plus, and the price is twice as expensive, but, in our opinion, today they are the best in this segment.
